How it all started
In December 2016, three commercial farm enterprises, the Landman Group, Blydevallei Boerdery, and Bavaria Fruit Estates, registered a social enterprise, the Hoedspruit Hub.
As a social enterprise, we endeavour to maximise a positive environmental and social impact alongside profit for our stakeholders. We aim to increase the resilience of commercial farming enterprises in South Africa through accredited and customised training, as well as social development initiatives.
Our start up phase between 2018 and 2021 was funded by the GIZ and the IDC. An impact study of our work was done by Big Mama’s Famous Trust Shop and can be viewed and downloaded here.
In 2019, we started to focus on functional agricultural numeracy and ways to develop it on the farms. This led to the development of numiknow™, a compendium of games to develop mathematical proficiency. The low standard of Mathematics in South Africa created the opportunity to implement numiknow™ in schools with some fantastic results. (Hope’s story of 1st competition). This led to SEF projects cooperating with GST to develop the mathematical proficiency of unemployed adults and learners in schools and further developments in numiknow® (second competition). The first SEF project was covered in K2C News in 8 articles.
